The School of Art of Guadix hosted yesterday Monday, October 9, the seminar ‘The poplar, a source of environmental and cultural benefits’, in which a dozen teachers, researchers and specialists have exposed the positive impact that this crop so rooted in the accitana region has on biodiversity, air cleanliness and soil quality. Without forgetting that poplar trees are a source of health and well-being for the population, that the wood of this species is very present in the monumental and industrial heritage of the province and that authors such as Góngora, Machado, Juan Ramón Jiménez or Federico García Lorca were inspired by these oases of freshness for their creations.
The event was attended by almost 80 people, arousing enormous interest due to the diversity of the presentations and aspects discussed. The event was the subject of an extensive photo report by local photographer Fernando Ortiz, to whom the LIFE Wood for Future project would like to thank for the photos in this article.
The seminar was followed by the exhibition ‘Choperas de Granada’, a selection of 26 photographs of the nearly 200 that participated in the contest organized last spring by the LIFE Wood for Future/Madera para el Futuro project, the Marjal Chopo Producers Association and the University of Granada. The images will be accompanied by the sound installation ‘Populus’, an “immersive sensory and emotional experience” created by composer and professor José López Montes.
The meeting will present the results of the LIFE Wood for the Future project, which ends in September of this year. . Representatives of forest owners from all the autonomous communities will meet at the Hotel Luna today and tomorrow.
The 26 photographs selected in the contest organized by the University and the Marjal Producers Association, together with a sound installation, are part of the exhibition at the Galería del Carmen of the Alhama Town Hall.
Organized by the University of Granada, through Medialab UGR of the Vice-Rectorate for Social Innovation, Employability and Entrepreneurship, in collaboration with Salvemos la Vega - Vega Educa and the City Council of Huétor Vega.
A study conducted by IFAPA proves the ability of this crop to take advantage of nitrates in its growth and prevent them from contaminating groundwater. The experiment is part of the LIFE Wood for the Future project, led by the University of Granada.
