The Consejería de Fomento, Articulación del Territorio y Vivienda de la Junta de Andalucía is promoting through AVRA (Agencia de la Vivienda y Rehabilitación de Andalucía) the construction of a pilot demonstration building of the mixed wood-concrete prefabricated product, MCLamBS, developed in the LIFE Wood for Future project. This was announced today by the Councilor Marifrán Carazo, the General Director of AVRA, Juan Carlos del Pino, and the project coordinator, Antolino Gallego, a professor at the University of Granada.
The building, whose execution project will be carried out by AVRA this year with its own resources, contemplates approximately 30 apartments for rental by young people on land provided by AVRA in the Azulejera neighborhood, very close to the Cartuja University Campus and the Fernando de los Ríos university residence. This 7-story building (6 stories high and basement) will use poplar from Granada in its mixed laminated beams, thus adding value to this local raw material and serving as a showcase for investors in a future industrial ecosystem in the area. The building thus responds to the demonstrative nature of the LIFE project by testing the technology in real conditions and putting the product close to the market.
In this way, and thanks to the support of the agreement between the UGR and AVRA, one of the roles that a modern university should have is to transform the environment from knowledge, in this case the knowledge developed at the Universities of Santiago de Compostela-Lugo Campus (PEMADE Platform) and Granada (UIMA Laboratory), partners of the project, with the collaboration of Grupo Rodiñas, a company associated with the project.
The project also falls within the scope of the 2030 Agenda to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, mitigating climate change by reducing the carbon footprint of construction through the incorporation of wood as part of the structure. In addition, it is an important step in the demonstration of a new paradigm in construction: prefabrication in industry and rapid and millimetric assembly on site. This mixed wood-concrete construction will mean a significant reduction in the amount of water used in construction, as the amount of reinforced concrete used will be reduced.
In turn, the building will promote poplar plantations as an active measure against pollution in Granada. A step towards environmental sustainability on all fronts by the poplar tree owners of the Agrupación Marjal in Granada, promoted by COSE, a partner in the project.
The Civitas-UGR Chair presented yesterday afternoon the book “Trends and innovation in sustainable construction”, in an event led by the director of the Chair, Mercedes García de Quesada. The presentation was held at the Royal Hospital, headquarters of the Rectorate of the University of Granada.
The Poplar Producers Association of Granada Marjal offers this weekend a course on management of vegetation cover in poplar groves for soil regeneration and improving biodiversity and productivity. This program, open to all interested parties and free of charge, will be taught by permaculture expert Radko Tichalvsky at the headquarters of the Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Training and Research (IFAPA) of the Junta de Andalucía (Camino de Purchil s / n) on Friday November 15 from 16.30 to 18.30 hours. On Saturday, November 16, a practical training will take place in several poplar groves in the Vega de Granada.
The visit to the wooden structures of the Alhambra and the Palacio de los Vargas in Granada, led by Ignacio Arto, professor at the University of Granada, has put the finishing touch to the M5 training module on durability, protection, diagnosis and rehabilitation given by the spinoff Iberolam Timber Technology, created for the transfer of the LIFE Wood for Future project.
The coordinator of the LIFE Wood for Future project, Antolino Gallego, participated last Thursday, November 7, in a Bioeconomy conference organized by the Málaga Provincial Council at La Noria, a social innovation center located in the capital of Málaga. Professor Gallego presented the talk "Structural bioproducts made in Andalucía" within the Bioproducts and Circularity panel.
