As part of the replicability and transfer of results at the level of demonstration plantations, several owners met yesterday with the owners of Agrícola Genil in Écija for a field day in the poplar plantations next to the Genil river in this Sevillian town. During the day, the different landowners, advised by María A. Ripoll from IFAPA-Granada, analysed important aspects such as the adaptation of the different poplar clones to the Vega baja del Genil, planting frames, pruning, soil management and stump removal, in order to obtain quality, thick, knot-free wood. It was concluded that there is a need for clonal trials, especially moving towards new clones more resistant to pests and climate change, as well as assessing the influence of the planting frame on tree growth and pruning. Agrícola Genil is a member of the poplar growers’ association of Granada, Marjal, thus demonstrating the willingness of LIFE Wood for Future for the replicability and transferability of the association in other Andalusian territories beyond the Vega de Granada. During the meeting, the project coordinator, Antolino Gallego, gave a brief introduction of the project, with special emphasis on the need to generate quality wood to supply the future laminate industry to produce MCLam and MCLamBS products.
The infrastructure would have led to the destruction of more than 30 hectares of poplar groves due to the power line easement zone. “The project threatened all the work of recent years to recover the crop,” said Victoria Carreras, president of the Marjal Association.
