The UGR researcher Antolino Gallego has presented the structural products of the project (MCLam and MCLamBS) during the scientific sessions of the 27th International Commission on Poplar other Fast Growing Species for the Maintenance of People and the Environment of the FAO, held in Bordeaux, France, between 22 and 25 October.
Professor Gallego began his speech by talking about poplar growing in Granada, with peculiarities such as blanket irrigation and the lack of large-scale plywood industries. He highlighted the poplar groves of Granada as areas of enormous environmental value for the atmosphere, soil and water. During his presentation he showed the important result of the constitution of the Agrupación Marjal, as well as the national characterization of poplar wood for structural use and its entry into the European and Spanish standards.
Subsequently, the general technical properties of the two products for sustainable industrialized construction were presented. Prof. Gallego ended his speech by introducing the spinoff company Ibeorlam Timber and Technology as a tool to bring these products to the market in the coming years, a company largely owned by poplar and pine forest owners.
The presentation was made to about 50 people within the Working Party on Products and Plantations, coordinated by Belgian professor Joris Van Acker, a specialist in engineered wood products, who described the project as an example of sustainable development to generate economy for local populations using local endogenous material.
