On December 3, 2021, the first edition of the Diploma of Wood Structures Calculation Applied to Projects, organized within the framework of the LIFE Wood for Future project, was closed by the International Graduate School of the University of Granada at the School of Building Engineering. The official Diploma, of 7.5 credits taught in blended mode (15 online and 60 face-to-face hours), was attended by 15 students from different degrees in the field of Architecture, Building Engineering and Civil Engineering.
The Diploma was structured in 5 modules taught by professors from the Universities of Granada and Santiago de Compostela-PEMADE (Plataforma de Ingeniería de la Madera Estructural): Properties of wood as a structural material; Theoretical introduction and calculation software (Dlubal); Seismic-resistant timber design; Bar structures; Structures of cross-laminated timber and light-framed timber. Students were provided with temporary licenses for different calculation software. The course was sponsored by the professional associations of Quantity Surveyors and Technical Architects of Granada, Jaen and Almeria, and had the collaboration of AITIM and the Cluster of Sustainable Construction of Andalusia (CSA).
The course has been framed within the dissemination activities of the LIFE Wood for Future project, having as main challenge the training of future professionals and technical prescribers in the field of construction with technical wood in southern Spain, in order to converge towards a low-carbon construction with a smaller ecological footprint and healthier for its users, based on the use of natural materials such as wood. This is a pioneering course in Granada, Andalusia and southern Spain, where wood construction is still much less common than in the rest of Spain. The course also included a visit to the restoration works of the future museum in Granada of the Hospitaller Order of San Juan de Dios.
The breakfast was attended by Yaiza Fuentes, a researcher from the UIMA-University of Granada laboratory, a recent doctor who has carried out the mandatory mechanical tests to incorporate poplar into the Spanish and European structural wood standards. During the debate, Yaiza Fuentes spoke about the progress of the project and the importance of the University as an agent to give added value to poplar trees and their wood.
The poplar crop has been the protagonist of one of the four days of the course on “New crops and alternative crops” promoted by the Escuela Familiar Agraria (EFA) El Soto located in Chauchina. The Escuela Familiar Agraria (EFA) “El Soto” is a vocational training center whose mission is to achieve the development of the rural environment.
