On June 12, 2023, the Governing Council of the Government of Andalusia took cognizance of the “Program to Promote Timber Harvesting in Andalusia”, promoted by the Directorate General of Forestry Policy and Biodiversity, which is a milestone in the democratic history in terms of change in the policy of Andalusian forest management.
This program has arisen largely due to the drive and knowledge transfer that the LIFE Wood for Future project has been actively carrying out for almost two years along the entire value chain, which brings together forest owners, forestry professionals (AFA-Profor), knowledge agents, industry, the construction sector and public administration.
The objective of the program is to stimulate timber harvesting in Andalusia, favoring sustainable forest management of forests and other agroforestry areas such as poplar groves, using quality timber for structural use in construction as the driving force. This revaluation of the Andalusian forest and its products will result in the implementation of actions for its improvement and conservation, as well as in the promotion of other forest products, one of the basic pillars of the new Forestry Policy in Andalusia.
The Program has started with a budget of 7,200,000 euros financed by the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
You can download the text of the Agreement of the Governing Council, which lays the foundations of the Program to Promote Timber Harvesting signed by the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, and the Minister of Sustainability, Environment and Blue Economy, José Ramón Fernández Pacheco, in which explicit reference is made to the role of the University of Granada as the initiator of this program. This work has been carried out through the LIFE Wood for Future project, its partners (UGR, USC-PEMADE, COSE, Diputación de Granada, 3edata) and its most direct associates (IFAPA, AFA-Profor, FORET, MARJAL, Iberolam Timber&Technology).

The breakfast was attended by Yaiza Fuentes, a researcher from the UIMA-University of Granada laboratory, a recent doctor who has carried out the mandatory mechanical tests to incorporate poplar into the Spanish and European structural wood standards. During the debate, Yaiza Fuentes spoke about the progress of the project and the importance of the University as an agent to give added value to poplar trees and their wood.
The poplar crop has been the protagonist of one of the four days of the course on “New crops and alternative crops” promoted by the Escuela Familiar Agraria (EFA) El Soto located in Chauchina. The Escuela Familiar Agraria (EFA) “El Soto” is a vocational training center whose mission is to achieve the development of the rural environment.
