During late June and early July has been developed the first edition of the course “Wood as a Building Material”, launched from the spinoff Iberolam Timber & Technology through the Iberolam Timber Academy platform.
The course has covered transversal aspects of wood, from sustainable forest harvesting, the first transformation of wood, wood anatomy, water in wood, mechanical, thermal and acoustic properties of wood, non-destructive testing in wood, as well as the quality parameters of wood and regulatory classification for structural use for technical wood products.
The course ended with an ambitious plan of laboratory practices carried out within the framework of the joint collaboration unit between Iberolam and the UIMA group (Structural Wood Research Unit of Andalusia) of the University of Granada.
This is the first course of a series of 5 modules covering the entire construction process, from the properties of wood and its classification, 3D modeling of structures, calculation, assembly of wooden structures and rehabilitation of wooden structures.
The objective of Iberolam Timber Academy is to generate knowledge and training as a basis for prescribing wood in architectural projects and its proper execution on site and factory processing. It is intended to complement, both in level and content, the academic and practical knowledge of architects, quantity surveyors, technical architects, building engineers, civil engineers, forestry and forest engineers, as well as professionals, teachers and students and graduates of higher vocational training in the timber industry.
In 2025 a new edition is expected to be held in the new UIMA facilities at the San Isidro Sugar Factory.
