The Ministry of Development, articulation of the territory and housing will join the University of Granada (UGR) to promote the use of wood in construction. This was stated by the Minister of Development, Marifrán Carazo, who announced this Friday in the capital of Granada the signing of a protocol with the academic institution to promote the use of wood from the poplar of the Vega in the construction of housing.
During the opening of the Technical Conference on the Use, Industrial Transformation and New Uses of Wood of Andalusia held in Granada, Marifrán Carazo stressed that “environmental sustainability, technology and development of the local economy are key to laying the foundations for a better future,” hence the Andalusian Government is committed to move forward in initiatives aimed at promoting respect for the environment and to promote research in this field.
The counselor has given as an example of this commitment to the environment the agreement signed with the Laboratory of Construction Engineering of the University of Granada that has allowed to have a new more sustainable asphalt, the Masai, which has made Andalusia has been the only autonomous community that has received funds from Europe to improve roads: 100 million euros of React-EU funds that are being used in the improvement of the A-92.
“We want to continue in this line, to continue researching in the search for materials and construction techniques that can help us to reduce the environmental impact and, for example, facilitate the construction of housing and its rehabilitation,” she said, as reported by the Board in a note.
Marifrán Carazo underlined the great potential that the use of forest resources has in the improvement of biodiversity and the reduction of polluting emissions and the local economy. That is why she has pointed out that the studies in collaboration with the UGR on the use of poplar wood “will boost a new industrial ecosystem and can contribute to the industrialization of the construction sector in Andalusia and improve its competitiveness”.
“We will collaborate with the University to advance the possibilities of using the wood of these trees in the construction and rehabilitation of housing, which will allow us to have more environmentally friendly housing,” he added.
