The Granada town of Huéscar has hosted the First Conference “Sustainability of our forests” organized by the recently created Association of Forest Owners of Eastern Andalusia. Both Marian Núñez, President of the Association, and Francisco Carreño, President of COSE (Confederation of Organizations of Foresters of Spain), as Antolino Gallego, Coordinator of LIFE Wood for Future, have stressed the importance of sustainable forest management and the use of forests in Eastern Andalusia to fight fires and pests, as well as to boost the economy of depopulated areas through local resources. The conference was held in the Plenary Hall of the Town Hall of the town, and it has highlighted the structuring role of the Associations and Groups of Producers to carry out this management with sustainable forest certification and ensure a steady supply of quality wood to the industry. The associationism is also the indispensable tool to work with the administration to defend the interests of private owners and the conservation of the forest and the promotion of the economy. The creation in the last year and independently of the Association of Forest Owners of Eastern Andalusia, based in Huescar, and the Marjal Grouping in the poplar sector of Granada and Andalusia, based in Granada, is good evidence that the forestry sector begins to give clear signs of revitalization, encouraged by the need to combat climate change, depopulation and dependence on foreign markets. For his part, Antolino Gallego presented the industrial model promoted by LIFE Wood for Future, which under an efficient technical pairing between poplar and pine wood, and eventually concrete, would consist of a series of local sawmills, a small structural wood laminates plant, an industry of mixed wood-concrete products, which would also be accompanied by a plant for the recovery of waste from the sawing of poplar and pine logs. This industrial ecosystem in the province would contribute to the valorization of the pine forests of the eastern mountains and poplar groves of Andalusia, which would require a sustainable forest management of the forests for their better use. The region of Huéscar-Castril also has a great potential for poplar plantations, so this mixed poplar-pine industrial model would be a double entry for its economy. Likewise, the region has an industrial success story, the company Tubocás S.L., dedicated to the manufacture of pellets, which could benefit significantly from this industrial ecosystem aimed at construction. The industrial model would reduce doubly the ecological footprint of construction, through the use of wood for structure and pellets as energy. The conference also included other interesting possibilities for the future for the valorization of the forests, such as the cultivation of truffles and the sale of carbon credits, as well as the attractiveness of mushroom picking, as highlighted by the teacher and beloved neighbor of the Sierra de Cazorla, Rufino Nieto.
