The Pemade team of the University of Santiago de Compostela at the Lugo Campus has carried out the first bending tests of the first prototype of a full-scale composite wood-concrete slab manufactured by Iberolam Timber & Technology in Granada. The success of the test (the 6 m long and 1.20 m wide prototype weighing only 1800 kg withstood 24 tons of load) confirms the validity of the product and its future transfer and manufacture in industrial plant.
The specimens were entirely manufactured in Granada by the mixed work unit between Iberolam and the UIMA group of the University of Granada.
The prototypes were concreted by the local company Hormigones Lastra entirely at the IFAPA-Camino del Purchil Granada facilities. The successful development has been possible thanks to the indications and lessons learned from previous tests carried out by the Galician company Prefabricados Rodiñas and USC-Pemade in the framework of the LIFE Wood for Future project.
The result is an important milestone for the project as it will contribute to the Andalusian industrial fabric, decarbonize construction and advance towards an industrialized construction that will allow the improvement and optimization of processes and face the challenge of the lack of workers on site.
In the coming months, tests will continue for the final certification of the product and its subsequent launch on the market.
The infrastructure would have led to the destruction of more than 30 hectares of poplar groves due to the power line easement zone. “The project threatened all the work of recent years to recover the crop,” said Victoria Carreras, president of the Marjal Association.
