Yesterday, Thursday, a group of students studying dual vocational training in the cycle “Interior works, decoration and rehabilitation” in the CIFP Coroso-Ribeira (province of A Coruña) have known the LIFE Wood for Future through various activities carried out in the facilities of the Structural Wood Engineering Platform (PEMADE) integrated in the University of Santiago de Compostela and located in the EPSE in the campus of Lugo; visit made at the request of their accompanying teacher José María Jiménez Bernal.
LIFE Wood for Future researchers have made the presentation of the various actions of the project, telling the evolution and current status of the same, with special attention to the impact on the entire value chain and the good reception of the Granada society.
The group was able to see in situ some of the work being carried out with the collaboration of researchers from the UGR, such as the visual classification of poplar wood, work among others, which will enable its characterization and subsequent entry into standard for structural use.
They were also able to visit the PEMADE equipment, specifically the unique infrastructure for mechanical testing, and the equipment that allows the manufacture of prototypes of the different materials under development MCLam and MCLam BS, as well as samples of them.
LIFE Wood for Future considers of vital importance that wood construction is integrated in the professional training of the construction sector so that there are qualified professionals, something essential for the implementation of this effective way of building that contributes to the adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
To end the day, we visited the Impulso Verde building, a building built entirely with local wood and FSC certification of Complete Project, under the LIFE Lugo + Biodynamic; thus checking the social value of a demonstrative building that allows to verify in situ the behavior and viability of local wood as a structural material.

The breakfast was attended by Yaiza Fuentes, a researcher from the UIMA-University of Granada laboratory, a recent doctor who has carried out the mandatory mechanical tests to incorporate poplar into the Spanish and European structural wood standards. During the debate, Yaiza Fuentes spoke about the progress of the project and the importance of the University as an agent to give added value to poplar trees and their wood.
The poplar crop has been the protagonist of one of the four days of the course on “New crops and alternative crops” promoted by the Escuela Familiar Agraria (EFA) El Soto located in Chauchina. The Escuela Familiar Agraria (EFA) “El Soto” is a vocational training center whose mission is to achieve the development of the rural environment.
