100 students of the Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria La Hispanidad de Santa Fe have known first hand the LIFe Wood for Future project through a talk by its coordinator, Prof. Antolino Gallego, today Tuesday, November 21, 2023.Starting from the history of poplar, a crop born nationally in Santa Fe through D. Diego Liñan in the late nineteenth century, Prof. Gallego has outlined the environmental benefits of poplar and the opportunity of this economic sector to return to the construction of our homes through structural technical wood products. Construction was the first use of poplar wood until the mid-1950s, when it was replaced by other materials such as steel, concrete and brick, and poplar was used in packaging and pallets. This use, of low added value, is the one that still remains in the area.
Professor Gallego has made clear the opportunity of Santa Fe to become again the center of the poplar industry for construction through the spinoff Iberolam Timber & Technology whose goal is to become a manufacturer in Andalusia of MCLam and MCLamBS products for sustainable construction with a low ecological footprint. The use of the sugar factory of Nuestro Señor de la Salud, La Cantina, as an industrial center, would also be a way to give life to this emblematic architectural space and recover a beautiful building from the late nineteenth century, a way to create employment in the area and ensure the environmental benefits of poplar.
The meeting will present the results of the LIFE Wood for the Future project, which ends in September of this year. . Representatives of forest owners from all the autonomous communities will meet at the Hotel Luna today and tomorrow.
