Last Saturday, March 11, ended one of the most representative demonstration plantations of the LIFE Wood for the Future project implemented within the COSE actions. Specifically, the plantation of the family of architects De la Torre-Castellano, located in the upper valley of the Genil River. With spring knocking at the doors and a new year of harsh drought, a large group of Marjal group members, project members, friends and relatives of the owners met to plant the vegetation band of this pilot plantation, formed by specimens of populus nigra (Lombardy poplars), in line with the lane of continuous enjoyment of the citizens of Granada.
The plantation, flanked by the Genil river and the Gorda irrigation channel, is made up of two sectors of the MC and Raspalje timber varieties using certified plants from the Hijos de Celedonio nursery located in the Vega de Granada. This is the first plantation in the area with a 5.5 x 5.5 m frame, thus aiming to demonstrate a more competitive selvicuture that generates quality and thicker wood for future structural and environmentally friendly use. The day also became a way to spread the culture of poplar and its environmental and cultural benefits among citizens and future generations. The spirit of this plantation is reflected in the words of one of the owners of this plantation and Secretary of Marjal, Alberto De la Torre Castellano: “these Lombardy poplars collect the energy of many special people for us, which together with the rich and clean waters of Sierra Nevada, will accompany us in this medium and long term adventure, as an engine of change towards a territory with more trees and a more sustainable architecture”.
A distinguished jury, composed of the renowned painter from Granada Juan Vida, the highly acclaimed artist Cristina Megía, and the Fine Arts professor Consuelo Vallejo, was in charge of awarding the prizes in the First Open-Air Quick Painting Competition “In Lorca’s Poplar Groves”, which took place this past Sunday, May 8th, in Valderrubio (Granada).
Over a hundred stakeholders from the construction ecosystem gathered at La Noria, part of the Málaga Provincial Council, for Málaga Bio activities, including networking talks, a participatory session, business speed chatting, and live demonstrations of wood structure prefabrication and assembly.
The infrastructure would have led to the destruction of more than 30 hectares of poplar groves due to the power line easement zone. “The project threatened all the work of recent years to recover the crop,” said Victoria Carreras, president of the Marjal Association.
