The Santa Fe City Council will cede the former Señor de la Salud sugar mill to a spinoff of the University of Granada to manufacture poplar wood products for sustainable construction.

Granada, November 30, 2023. The rector of the University of Granada, Pedro Mercado, and the mayor of Santa Fe, Juan Cobo, signed on Wednesday a collaboration protocol that provides for the transfer of the former 19th century Señor de la Salud sugar factory to the spinoff IberoLam Timber&Technology, created in 2022 by the Structural Wood Research Unit of Andalusia (UIMA) and promoted by the European project LIFE Wood for Future, led by the UGR.

On November 24, 50 students from the Institute of Secondary Education Arabuleila (Cúllar Vega) of the technological branch visited the facilities of the UIMA (Wood Research Unit of Andalusia) and the LIFE Wood for the Future project.

Towards aid for poplar cultivation: line of work with the Delegation of Agriculture in Granada

Hispanidad High School in Santa Fe learns about LIFE Wood for Future project

100 students of the Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria La Hispanidad de Santa Fe have known first hand the LIFe Wood for Future project through a talk by its coordinator, Prof. Antolino Gallego, today Tuesday, November 21, 2023.Starting from the history of poplar, a crop born nationally in Santa Fe through D. Diego Liñan in the late nineteenth century, Prof. Gallego has outlined the environmental benefits of poplar and the opportunity of this economic sector to return to the construction of our homes through structural technical wood products.

On October 28th, the coordinator of the LIFE Wood for Future project participated as a keynote speaker at a round table organized by the Granada-based company Audi Nucesa to promote mobility with electric vehicles. In it, Professor Antolino Gallego exposed the need to act, invest and promote the expansion of poplar groves, sustainable public transport and the use of electric cars, as efficient measures to combat pollution in the metropolitan area of Granada.
