Recovery of the avenues of La Vega de Granada for the improvement of biodiversity and long-term carbon sequestration in structural bioproducts
A nursery of certified Populus mother plants for reforestation for timber use and environmental restoration will be created in the Provincial Nursery of the Provincial Council of Granada (Cortijo Peinado, Fuentevaqueros).
Production of certified plants for reforestation and environmental restoration, in 1 ha of the forestry nursery of the Provincial Council of Granada.
Production of certified poplar clones for transformation into high quality wood and of native Populus species (nigra, alba and tremula), for the recovery of riverbanks and other degraded areas, in cooperation with the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation, Town Councils of the Vega de Granada and Citizen Associations.

At least 2 km of riverbank will be restored in the Vega de Granada using native Populus spp. as a base.
Environmental restoration of at least 2 km of riverside woodland in the Vega of Granada by planting native species produced in the nursery of the Provincial Council of Granada, in collaboration with local councils, environmental associations and volunteers.
Pilot plantations will be established in the Vega de Granada that apply sustainable forest management for the production of quality wood for structural products, under the common umbrella of an Association of Poplar Ecoproducers.
Creation of a Poplar Ecoproducer Group that applies sustainable land management based on the association of landowners under a silvicultural model with certified sustainable forest management and Carbon Farming schemes to enhance the value of CO2 capture from poplar groves.
Forestry plantations and silvicultural treatments, applying Sustainable Forest Management and following the good environmental practices contained in the forestry model generated, on private and public land, in collaboration with landowners and agricultural foresters.
A system for selling carbon credits to be integrated into the market will be designed to generate additional income for poplar plantation owners and reduce the carbon footprint of companies and entities.
Based on the measurement and calculation of the carbon levels in each of the sink stores of the forestations carried out, and of the existing ones in which forestry for environmental improvement is applied, a carbon credit market will be generated.
These credits will be integrated into the diffuse market already created through the LIFE Forest CO2 project for which it is also expected to add new entities and companies wishing to reduce their carbon footprint.
Structural MC wood in standing tree and sawn board will be characterised and brought to standard, assigning a T (tensile) strength class to allow its use in structural laminated products.
Characterisation of MC wood (poplar of the MC-Meloni Carlo clone) by means of destructive and non-destructive mechanical tests. Incorporation of poplar wood into the EN 1912 standard, as a structural species with the assignment of a T resistance class, thus promoting its use at a structural level and the development of the structural products proposed in the project.
Creation and commercialisation of a technological tool (TIK tool) for the evaluation of the quality of wood in tree and board, with wireless data transmission to an online platform, which evaluates the wood and allows to automatically decide the destination of the wood from a given plantation.
Two low carbon footprint industrialised structural products using MC timber as the basis of their manufacture (MCLam laminated beams and MCLam BS mixed wood-concrete) will be developed until their CE marking is obtained.
Obtaining the CE marking of MCLam and MCLam BS products, necessary for commercialisation in the European market, and the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), necessary to avoid market reticence in the face of an innovative approach to a technology.
Based on the poplar products generated (MCLam), industrialised mixed wood-concrete structural systems will be developed and characterised for application as a prefabricated solution incorporated into all types of buildings to reduce their carbon footprint.
Development and validation of two structural products: a) Poplar MCLam beams; laminated beams made of structural MC timber; b) Mixed MCLam beams; laminated beams made of structural MC timber and high quality pine timber. Both products are made from locally sourced timber.
MCLam and MCLam BS products will be applied in at least one building to evaluate the proposed technology on a real level and serve as demonstration examples for future prescription and market expansion.
Design of construction solutions adapted to different conditions and real use in at least one residential, public or industrial building.
An assessment will be made of the environmental benefits provided by the project in all its areas in the area of action, the Vega de Granada.
The improvement in forest management and the reforestation of areas with intensive agricultural crops leads to an improvement in the services provided by ecosystems, goods and services that promote human well-being. Therefore, the changes and repercussions of the project on ecosystem services in the Vega de Granada will be evaluated. The results will be transferred to the population.
The contribution of the project to the environmental improvement of the Vega de Granada will be measured, as well as its socio-economic and environmental impact.
The monitoring of the impact on CO2 emissions will be carried out through the evaluation of CO2 absorbed in each of the sinks of the forestations carried out and the existing ones, to which carbon forestry will be applied (aerial system, root system, dead matter on the ground, organic carbon in the soil and use in long life structural products).
A strategy will be designed for the transfer and commercialisation of the project’s products, as well as for the replication of its results in other territories.
The project aims to ensure and increase the replicability and transferability of the project results, enhancing their added value in the EU. It aims to generate networks with other projects that improve the environment, act against Climate Change and promote the bioeconomy.
Promote the commercialisation of the solutions obtained (TIK tool, structural products and certified plant nursery) in the territory itself, as well as in Spain and internationally, so that sustainable management is also transferred to commercialisation throughout the value chain, by minimising CO2 emissions from the transport of materials. In this way, the economic dynamism of the county and the region is also promoted through innovative local solutions.
Project management and coordination actions between partners and CINEA will be developed and a project continuity plan will be elaborated after the end of the project.
Management and coordination of the project at technical, administrative and financial level, ensuring compliance with the rules established by CINEA for the Programme, and maintaining the flow of communication with CINEA and the External Monitoring Team.
Elaboration of the After-LIFE Plan, a planning document of the actions that will take place after the end of the project, thus ensuring its continuity.
The activities and results of the project will be disseminated through all the agents involved in the value chain, which will be brought together in a new platform, ChopoGlobal, which will make it possible to develop a new local ecosystem around the bioeconomy of poplar for structural use.
Establishment of a network of connections between all the agents involved in the poplar wood construction value chain from the beginning (foresters/wood producers) to the end consumer, including nurseries, the laminate industry, technology and wood characterisation laboratories, clusters, architectural and engineering firms, product marketing spin-offs, building constructors and assemblers, developers, etc., to generate and consolidate this emerging bioeconomic market and ecosystem. The platform will also incorporate the commercialisation of CO2 rights generated in the ecosystem to sell them to companies/industries that emit CO2into the atmosphere, through the absorption of our plantations and long-term sequestration in our structural products.
Dissemination of the project’s activities and results, and raising public awareness of the need to mitigate climate change and improve the quality of soil, air and water through the complete cycle of wood and poplar.
