At the initiative of the LIFE Wood for Future project, on March 14, 2023, the Wood Multisectoral Roundtable was constituted in Granada at the Delegation of the Andalusian Regional Government in Granada. Chaired by the Delegate of the Junta, Antonio Granados, the table has the participation of the Delegates of Environment, Agriculture, Industry and Finance, Universities and Innovation, Employment and Housing.
At the meeting, the project coordinator, Professor Antolino Gallego of the University of Granada, presented the opportunity that Granada has with its numerous forest resources to develop an industrial ecosystem based on the use of wood for structural purposes. The industry as a driver of the resource is the key to implement this ecosystem, thus promoting sustainable forest management of the forest and poplar groves and therefore the fight against fires and rural depopulation.
The meeting was also attended by the professor of the University of Santiago de Compostela and director of PEMADE, Manuel Guaita, who as a partner of the LIFE project argued that the use of wood in construction is the best way to give value to the forest and thus generate more trees and fight against climate change and biodiversity loss. These arguments were endorsed by the president of the Agrupación de Choperos Marjal, Victoria Carreras, also present at this first meeting of the Bureau.
The Board, through its various delegations present, expressed its full support for this ecosystem through public aid, specific employment training programs and promotion of sustainable forest management of the forest and the use of local wood in housing and public construction of the Board.
